Installing AVG Free Edition

The first thing you should do before installing AVG Free Edition is to remove any virus scanners that you currently have on you system, if you already have one. Click Start -> Programs, then go to the folder containing the anti-virus software that you use. It may be listed under the name of the anti-virus software, or the the name of the company that made the anti-virus software.

If you can't find it, or it does not have an uninstall button, you can have Windows remove it. In Windows XP, click Start -> Control Panel (or Start -> Settings -> Control Panel if you use the old Start Menu style). In the control panel click "Add/Remove Programs". Select your anti-virus program, and click "Add/remove". Then follow the instructions.

Some anti-virus programs work with AVG Free Edition, like Ewido. However, if you use an anti-virus scanner like McAfee, Norton, or "avast!", then you should uninstall it first.

Once you have uninstalled your current anti-virus software, you may now install your new anti-virus software:

1. Go to http://www.grisoft.com/.
2. Select "AVG Free Edition" from the left side menu.
3. When you reach the bottom of the page, download the AVG Free Edition installation file. (You should download the file to your desktop, unless you have a better place to put it.)
4. Once the file is downloaded, double click the file on your desktop. (It will start with "avg". Also, you may disconnect your Internet connection at this point.)
5. Follow the install instructions. Accept all default options. You may need to restart your computer.

You should update and scan your computer manually every 1 week to 1 month. Although there is a 'virus shield' on your computer that protects you, you should run a complete scan. (Also, make sure you run spyware checks.)
