How To Use AVG Free Edition

AVG Free Edition is a good anti-virus scanner. In general it will scan your computer for viruses every few days. But it's important to make sure that it is catching and cleaning these viruses.

I will now walk you through checking your scan results. First, you must start "AVG Free Edition for Windows":

Click Start -> Programs -> AVG Free Edition -> AVG Free Edition for Windows

  1. Click "Test Results" on the menu on the left side of the screen.
  2. A list of all virus scans will be listed. Check for any red entries. Especially look at the last virus scan. If the last virus scan was completed successfully and it did not find any virus, your system is good.
    1. If you find a red entry, this means that a virus was found. Simply click the "more information" button to see if the virus was cleaned. If it was, then your system is good. If not, than you should start a manual scan. Directions are listed below.
    2. Look for any files that have a rip in the middle of them. If the last few scans have this icon, this means that it didn't fully scan your system. You should start a manual scan. Directions are listed below.
    3. If the last virus scan in the list was over a month ago, you should run a manual scan. Directions are listed below.

AVG Free Edition manual scan

If you find that AVG has not scanned your computer automatically, or it has not scanned it in more than a month, this is how you can run a scan yourself:

Click Start -> Programs -> AVG Free Edition -> AVG Free Edition for Windows

  1. Click "Check for Updates". (You Internet connection will need to be active at this point.) You should always check for updates before you do a scan.
    1. The first time it may ask you to choose if you want to use the Internet to download the update. Select 'Internet', and choose to always use this option.
  2. Once it finishes downloading the update, it will install it, and may restart AVG Free Edition. (At this point you may close your Internet connection.)
  3. Click "Scan Computer". It will then scan your system looking for infected files. This will take some time.
  4. If any viruses are detected, they will be automatically healed or sent to the "Virus Vault". When the scan has been completed, a window will pop-up telling you if healing the files has worked. This window may disapear on it's own after a minute. A second window will pop-up with a list of statistics about how many viruses were healed, how many were moved to the virus vault, and how many were deleted. After a minute, this window will disapear, and another window will pop-up with the full test results.
  5. Once you are done, if any files were moved to the Virus Vault, click "Virus Vault" on the left-hand menu.
    1. First, try to heal the files again.
    2. Try to "whipe" or delete the files.
    3. If you think that you may want to keep the file, you can leave it in the vault for another week and try to heal it later, when you get a program update.
  6. .If you are unable to clean or remove a virus, then you should run another anti-virus program, like Ewido, to try to remove that virus.

And remember that you should do a spyware check just as often.
